UPDATE as of SEPTEMBER 26: The Neenah and Menasha Historical Society has made the difficult decision to cancel this event due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases in our area. We want to make sure to do our part to keep our members and friends safe. We apologize for any inconvenience.
A Walkabout at Smith Park with Menasha and Neenah Historical Society and Doty Island Development Council
Presentations will take place throughout the park and on the Isle of Valor. Photos and stories from as far back as the late 1800’s will be shared. You’re invited to learn how riverboats and railroads played such an important role in the development of Menasha and Neenah. Susan B. Anthony and Amelia Earhart both came here via train!
Presentations on the Banta and Gilbert paper companies will be held in the pavilion every half hour beginning at 1:30. Artifacts will be on display including volumes of the ‘Nightmare!’
Did you know that our public swimming area was behind the Memorial Building before the pool opened in 1956?
Do you know who Elisha D. Smith was and why our public library and Smith Park were named in his honor?
Did you know that a school was once located within Smith Park and that several famous tennis stars played on courts located just across from the park?
We have so many stories to share! The event is free and open to the public. Maps and programs will be available across from the “Mem” and at the southern end of Park Street.
Our rain date is Sunday, October 4. There are no Packer games scheduled for either afternoon.
You may wish to bring lawn chairs. Social distancing and wearing of masks will be greatly appreciated!
